Heather Small - Former M People front lady, now solo star checks into the show!

Heather Small has been one of the most successful 90s British soul artists, most famously as part of M People.

Born in 1965, she was born and raised in London, joining her first group ‘Hot House’ whilst in her teens. Her distinct voice caught the attention of DJ Mike Pickering, formerly of 80s new wave dance act Quango Quango, who signed her up as a singer with his project, M People. His choice paid off, and M People went on to sell over 10 million albums worldwide, scoring top 10 hits such as Moving on Up and Search for the Hero.

In 1997, Heather was part of the Children In Need single with a wide range of artists including Tom Jones and Lou Reed, which sold over a million copies, staying at number 1 for 3 weeks in 2 separate spells. In 1998 it was announced the band were taking a break, and Heather decided to pursue a solo career, releasing her first album and single ‘Proud’ in 2000, which became the theme tune to Oprah Winfrey’s show, and has also been associated closely with the British Olympics team, named as the official anthem for the 2012 London Olympics.

Many other solo hits followed, such as Holding On, and the duet with Tom Jones, ‘You Need Love Like I Do’.

Recently Heather has also been a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing in 2008.

In May and June 2009, Small will tour the UK. The setlist will include Small's solo tracks, M People songs and some jazz
